Is there any way to tell if a map document is dirty?

I can set or clear the dirty flag on a document through the IDocumentDirty interface. But where can I read the dirty flag?

I want to show a custom dialog prompting the user to save their map (before opening another one programmatically), but I only want to show it if the document has unsaved changes.
